This particular VW Thing, which the Germans identify as Type 181, carries VIN 1842625636E. It has 54495 miles showing, has been extensively restored and upgraded to provide a very singular and genuinely fun driving experience. The extraordinarily well-done exterior is finished in Ferrari Red paint and is complemented with a well chosen and well executed tan cloth interior. It is even fitted with VW label seatbelts.
Interior:
The interior has fresh upholstery, carpets, a great looking wood steering wheel, and a sound system perhaps more fitted to a living room than a motor vehicle. This car has great eye appeal and is fully sorted. This VW came from California to the Oregon High Desert and thus has never suffered from any serious rust damage or accident. This is the final version of the Thing offered for sale in the US. It is ready for summer fun right now.
Mechanical:
A delight to the eye and ear, the 1740cc engine is rebuilt with many performance and cosmetic modifications, holds great oil pressure, and is monitored by supplemental VDO oil pressure and water temperature gauges. A new, “Extractor” exhaust is fitted adding a great exhaust tone that is not too loud. The engine room itself is very tidy and well finished. Nicely chosen alloy wheels compliment the overall appearances whilst revealing the four-wheel disc brakes, which have been added all around for superior performance under all circumstances. The suspension has been completely rebuilt and is supported by a fully detailed and reinforced chassis pan.
Paint and finish:
Paint finish is beautifully applied and has an attention to preparation and finish that is truly uncommon for a utility vehicle. The bumpers front and rear are custom made and beautifully finished as well. The engine bay and trunk are painted in the same color as the exterior. This Thing car has been driven, but shows well and has only the a few minor of rock chips. The trunk is nicely finished and contains a bag for storage of the side curtains. Overall this is a great looking car that can be enjoyed and driven today. There is a complete roll cage that can be unbolted if one chooses to do so.
Brief history of Model: 1974 Volkswagen Type 181 “Kurierwagen”
With a history that extends back to the 1930′s Kubelwagen – the Volkswagen “Things” (as they were tagged in the US) have an active cult following today and for very good reason. The doors and windows are removable without tools, and the windshield folds down, similar to a Jeep. The interior is a perfect illustration of post-modern form following function, with painted steel door panels and split flat bench seats.
Wheels and Tires:
The nicely chosen alloy wheels are surprisingly comfortable counterpoint to the utilitarian heritage. They are in great shape and fitted with 205/60 x 15 Fulda tires having approximately 80-90% tread remaining.
Summation:
With full weather gear all in great condition (glass side curtains) this Type 181 has benefited from proper sorting and upgrades and drives well. VW Things in general, and certainly this particular example, appeal to those fun-loving individuals with perhaps a taste for history. This is indeed a fun loving and surprisingly utilitarian companion. It has an exterior color and finish that is a singular event that will attract attention wherever it goes. Priced fairly so it will not last long. Feel free to call Bob at 541-543-6791 cell if any questions.
